Nymans Café serves as a well-trodden spot in Handcross for those pausing during a National Trust visit or locals seeking a straightforward, comforting café experience. The setup in a marquee-style building comes with plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, though the space tends to fill up quickly, especially at weekends.

The menu leans on familiar café staples — think sandwiches, sausage rolls, Cornish pasties, and classic cream teas — with options that appeal to families, including a children's menu. Visitors often come with a mix of intent: some opting for a quick coffee and cake, others settling in for a more substantial lunch like a vegetable tagine or hearty macaroni cheese. Despite the simplicity, the food tends to be freshly prepared and offers good value, making it a practical choice rather than a gourmet destination.

Atmospherically, expect a bustling environment where queues are common around peak times. Staff manage to keep things moving with efficiency and friendly service, smoothing over the inevitable rush. The marquee itself shows signs of wear, reflecting the café’s functional rather than stylish approach to hospitality. Outdoor seating offers a chance to soak in the surroundings when the weather allows, which aligns well with the local rhythm of visitors arriving mid-morning or early afternoon.

This café is best for casual visitors looking for dependable, uncomplicated meals in a lively setting. It suits families, National Trust patrons, and those who appreciate a no-fuss spot to rest during a day out. Visiting on weekdays or earlier in the day can mean an easier time finding a table. Overall, Nymans Café blends into its countryside spot as a familiar hub rather than a destination in its own right.

Generally speaking, the cafe offers good quality food: sandwiches, cakes, scones and cooked food at reasonable cost. Children's menu available too. Pleasant seating area. Can become very busy at weekends.

Tasty food, which makes sense because there was a queue for lunch and very fast service, wow

The marquee cafe building is a bit tired now but the staff do an excellent job. Good basic NT fare for meals and cake options. Decent coffee and tea options too. Plenty of seating inside and out, but always busy so they do run out!

A really good National Trust cafe. We popped kn twice during our visit, once for lunch - a delicious macaroni cheese with pork - and then later on for tea and cake. Queues can be quite long, but the food is healthy and freshly cooked, and the staff give service with a smile. Very good value for eating and drinking - looking forward to visiting again soon.

Very busy and a little difficult to get a table but we did get one . Good choice of food and very pleasant service. I had the vegetable tagine, which was really good and the person I was with had the sausage, mash & kale dish which he enjoyed and it looked lovely. Much better experience than our last visit to Wakehurst Place .
